Japan's Gran Tenku Train Unites Osaka's Buzz with Kōyasan's Sacred Serenity in 2026

Nankai Electric Railway Co. will launch its new Gran Tenku train service on 24 April 2026. The route connects Osaka's bustling Namba Station with the serene mountain retreat of Kōyasan in Wakayama Prefecture. Passengers can expect a journey blending modern comfort with deep cultural immersion.

The Gran Tenku service spans 90 minutes, covering a scenic 20-kilometre ascent through 24 tunnels. Along the way, travellers will take in panoramic views of forested hills and distant mountain skylines. Inside, the train features understated luxury, with warm gold and deep red tones accommodating around 70 passengers.

Upon arrival at Gokurakubashi Station, passengers can transfer directly to the cable car for the final climb to Mount Kōya. The destination, Kōyasan, stands as the spiritual heart of Shingon Buddhism, founded by the monk Kūkai in the early 9th century. The site includes over 100 temples and shrines, among them the Kongōbu-Ji head temple complex and the vast Okunoin cemetery—Japan's largest, with over 200,000 gravestones.

The service promises more than just transport. Passengers will experience Japanese history, craftsmanship, and regional cuisine throughout the trip. While Gokurakubashi Station itself is not the start of traditional pilgrimage paths, visitors can access Kōyasan's main sites via bus or bike from Koyasan Station after the cable car ride. Nearby, ancient routes like the Fudōzaka Trail lead to UNESCO-listed sacred sites within the Kii Mountains.

The Gran Tenku service offers a seamless link between urban Osaka and one of Japan's most revered spiritual destinations. With its blend of luxury, scenery, and cultural engagement, the train aims to provide a unique way to explore Kōyasan's rich heritage. Tickets will be available from the launch date in April 2026.
