Detroit's Culinary Renaissance Wins National Recognition and Michelin Attention
Detroit’s dining scene has been growing steadily in recent years. A wave of new restaurants and bars has brought fresh flavours and styles to the city, drawing attention from national food organisations. Several notable spots have opened across Detroit. Sunda New Asian, originally from Chicago, launched in March 2023. Little Liberia serves West African dishes, while Tacos Wuey offers Mexican street food inspired by Tulum. Medusa Cucina Siciliana specialises in Mediterranean and Sicilian cuisine. For drinks, Saksey’s operates as an underground cocktail lounge, and Antidote brings a chef-driven approach to East Village.
The city’s culinary rise has not gone unnoticed. Bar Chenin received a 2026 James Beard Foundation nomination for Best New Bar. The James Beard Foundation has also recognised other Detroit establishments for their contributions. More recognition is on the way, as the Michelin Guide plans to include Detroit in its first Great Lakes Edition in 2027. The Michelin Guide’s upcoming feature will highlight Detroit’s growing reputation as a food destination. The city’s diverse and expanding restaurant scene continues to attract attention from critics and diners alike. This momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
