Bremen's Bold Move: Secret Code for Safety in Public Spaces

Bremen is launching new initiatives to tackle violence and harassment against women. The city will mark the 'Bremen Says No to Violence Against Women' campaign on 25 November at 8:06 a.m. with a flag-raising event. Alongside this, the 'Do you know MIKA?' scheme offers discreet help for those feeling unsafe in public spaces. The 'Do you know MIKA?' initiative was created by notruf Bremen. It allows anyone who feels harassed, threatened, or unsafe to seek assistance by asking venue staff, 'Do you know MIKA?' The question acts as a code, signalling the need for help without drawing attention.

Participating bars, clubs, stadiums, festivals, and leisure facilities display posters and flyers about the scheme. Staff at these venues receive training from notruf Bremen to recognise and respond to the request. The campaign is open to all individuals, regardless of gender, and aims to provide quick, effective support in distressing situations.

Bettina Wilhelm, Bremen’s State Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, has publicly endorsed the initiative. She highlights its importance in addressing underreported issues like sexual harassment and stalking, which frequently affect young women. Venues supporting the scheme also promote a clear message: 'You are safe here.' The combined efforts of the flag-raising campaign and the 'Do you know MIKA?' initiative seek to reduce barriers for people seeking help. They also aim to create safer environments in Bremen’s social and entertainment spaces. The schemes address ongoing concerns about harassment and violence while encouraging greater awareness and support.
