Black Forest's Wälder Weeks Spotlights Rare Cattle and Regional Flavors
The Wälder Weeks event is set to celebrate regional Black Forest cuisine from June 19 to July 5. Local restaurants will serve dishes made from Vorderwälder and Hinterwälder cattle, two traditional breeds of the area. The initiative highlights the importance of these animals to the region’s culture and environment. Sixteen certified Naturpark innkeepers and restaurateurs will take part in the event. Venues span locations such as Todtnau, Feldberg, Oberried, and the Glottertal valley. Guests can expect steaks, braised dishes, and fillet specialties sourced from verified regional breeding programmes.
The cattle play a vital role in maintaining open meadows and preserving biodiversity in the Southern Black Forest. Each animal’s pedigree is documented, ensuring transparency and quality. Organisers encourage reservations due to expected demand. Dining at participating venues supports local farms and the conservation of traditional landscapes. The event aims to raise awareness of the breeds and their ecological value. It also offers visitors a taste of authentic Black Forest heritage.
