A new study published in Oncoscience on 28 April 2026 examines how lifestyle factors influence prostate cancer risk. The research, conducted in India, addresses a gap in existing literature by focusing on an Indian population. It was led by Maya Kulshekar and Anuradha B. Patil at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Karnataka. The team compared 72 men with prostate cancer to 132 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). They analysed various lifestyle factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, dietary habits, and occupational exposure.
After adjusting for confounding variables using multivariate logistic regression, the study found no significant link between prostate cancer risk and alcohol, tobacco, tea intake, or farming-related exposure. However, coffee consumption was associated with a 65% lower likelihood of developing prostate cancer. Meat consumption also showed a protective effect, reducing the risk by about 48%. The findings suggest that dietary choices, particularly coffee and meat intake, may play a role in reducing prostate cancer risk. The results contribute to a broader understanding of how lifestyle factors could be integrated into risk reduction strategies. The study highlights the need for further research in diverse populations.
