Canned wine wins over Gen Z and millennials with convenience and quality
Canned wine is gaining ground in the U.S. market as younger drinkers embrace its convenience. Sales of wine-based ready-to-drink beverages rose nearly 14% in off-premise dollar sales during the first quarter of 2026. The shift reflects changing habits among Gen Z and millennial consumers. Gen Z now makes up 14% of U.S. wine drinkers, up from 9% just two years ago. Millennials have also overtaken baby boomers, accounting for 31% of the market compared to 26%. Younger drinkers prefer cans for occasions like hikes, beaches, or outdoor events where bottles are less practical.
Early canned wines struggled with quality issues, often featuring mass-market blends and off-flavours from poor liner technology. However, better producers began treating the can as a serious vessel, leading to noticeable improvements. Aluminium packaging now preserves acceptable wine quality for up to six months.
The category has also gained credibility beyond casual settings. Fine-dining beverage directors have started recommending canned wines, while domestic airlines have begun serving them. Producers focusing on quality in canned formats are now seeing the strongest growth in the industry. The rise of canned wine is reshaping the market. Younger consumers are driving demand, and improved quality has broadened its appeal. The format is now a serious option for both everyday and premium drinking occasions.
