Vatican's Synod document charts a path for unity and mission in the Church
The Vatican’s General Secretariat of the Synod released a working document on 9 July 2023. It serves as the foundation for the second session of the Synod on Synodality. The text explores how the church can embody a missionary and synodal way of life. The document opens with a passage from Isaiah 25 and is divided into five sections. It examines relationships within the church, how to nurture them, and the real-world settings where they unfold. A key proposal is the creation of a formal ministry dedicated to listening and accompaniment.
The text stresses that synodality is not a goal but a method of living and working together. It aligns with the synod’s broader theme of communion, participation, and mission. Readers are encouraged to study the document and discuss it in their communities, as Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas, suggested.
Reactions to the document have been positive. Jesuit Father James Martin called it a sign of hope for those who have felt excluded. Sherry Anne Weddell, co-founder of the Catherine of Siena Institute, noted that implementing its ideas demands spiritual maturity. Charleen Katra, executive director of the National Catholic Partnership on Disability, welcomed its focus on accessible liturgies for people with disabilities. The working document provides a framework for the church’s future direction. It invites reflection on how to foster unity and mission through synodality. Communities are now tasked with reading, discerning, and applying its guidance.
