UNCCD Unveils Bold 2030 Plan to Halt Desertification and Land Degradation
The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has gathered to step up action against desertification and drought. Over 100 countries have pledged to set voluntary targets for land degradation neutrality (LDN). A new strategy for LDN will run from 2018 to 2030, as the current plan ends this year. The UNCCD will assist countries in tracking, assessing and reporting their progress on LDN. It will also offer guidance on methods and engage other partners to support these efforts.
The next Conference of the Parties will adopt an updated strategy. Decisions will cover drought, sand and dust storms, and capacity building. Ignoring LDN could lead to political fallout, the UNCCD’s Executive Secretary warned.
LDN is part of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to help communities tackle climate change, create rural jobs, and improve food security. Without action, desertification and drought may displace 135 million people over the next three decades. The UNCCD’s revised plan will shape global efforts until 2030. Countries will receive tools and support to meet their LDN targets. Success could reduce migration pressures and boost stability in vulnerable regions.
