NYC's First Government-Run Grocery Store to Open in the Bronx Next Year

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced plans for a new government-run grocery store in the Bronx. The initiative aims to provide affordable, high-quality groceries and improve food access across the city. The store is expected to open next year. The city-owned grocery initiative seeks to lower costs on everyday staples by cutting certain expenses typically passed to consumers. Under the model, the city will own the land and cover overhead costs, while a private operator will handle daily operations. Savings on a core basket of goods will go directly to customers.

Mayor Mamdani has allocated £70 million in capital funds for the development of five initial sites. A proposal from City Councilmember Jennifer Gutiérrez pushes for at least five municipal grocery stores per borough. The plan requires the commissioner of small business services or a designated agency leader to establish these stores in consultation with a contracted entity.

The proposal also aims to ensure the stores remain operational beyond the mayor’s current term. The new store in the Bronx will be the first of several planned across the city. The initiative intends to strengthen neighbourhood food access and maintain long-term affordability. The city expects the model to reduce prices on essential items for residents.
