Easter budgets shrink as chocolate and fuel prices surge in 2024

Easter celebrations are looking different this year as rising costs push families to cut back. With chocolate prices soaring and fuel expenses climbing, many are rethinking their plans. The Jakobs family, like others, is finding ways to keep traditions alive without overspending.

A YouGov survey reveals that 40 percent of Germans intend to spend less on Easter this year. The German Retail Association predicts a 6.5 percent drop in sales compared to 2023, with total revenues expected to reach around €2.1 billion.

Chocolate prices have jumped sharply. The iconic Lindt hare now costs €8.99 for 200 grams—a 28.6 percent increase. Smaller sizes have also risen, with the 100-gram version up 16 percent to €4.99 and the 50-gram one now €3.29, an 18 percent hike. Fuel costs and inflation are adding to the strain. Camping fees and road trips have become pricier, forcing shoppers to watch their budgets closely. The Jakobs family has adjusted by choosing cheaper alternatives and planning local outings instead of expensive trips. Despite the financial squeeze, they remain committed to traditions like Easter egg hunts. Many others are doing the same—scaling back but still making room for celebration.

This Easter, families are balancing tradition with tighter budgets. Higher prices for chocolate, fuel, and groceries mean fewer big purchases and more careful planning. Yet, for many like the Jakobs, the holiday's spirit remains—just with a little more thrift.
