Japan's military rebrands air force to include space operations by 2026

Japan’s parliament has approved laws to rename the Air Self-Defence Force as the Air and Space Self-Defence Force. The change marks the first update to a Self-Defence Force branch name since 1954. It also signals a shift in Japan’s military strategy towards space as an operational domain. The new Air and Space Self-Defence Force will officially launch in fiscal 2026. A dedicated Space Operations Group will be created to oversee activities in this domain. Japan plans to deploy satellites to boost space situational awareness and surveillance capabilities.

The reorganisation mirrors the US Space Force model. It also reflects Japan’s growing military ambitions and support for overseas operations. To improve coordination, the country may increase the number of state ministers of defence as early as this summer.

Orbital reconnaissance and enhanced cross-unit communications are expected to play a key role in far-seas operations. However, designating outer space as an operational domain challenges postwar constitutional limits on Japan’s military expansion. The renaming and restructuring of the Air Self-Defence Force will take effect with the establishment of the new branch. Japan aims to strengthen its space and reconnaissance abilities to support broader defence operations. The move represents a significant step in the country’s evolving military posture.
