Mainz restaurateur Jan Appeltrath unveils bold new venture at historic Zollhafen site

A well-known figure in Mainz’s dining scene has acquired a historic site for a major new venture. Jan Appeltrath, a seasoned restaurateur, has purchased the former 'Zum Schorsch' snack bar at Zollhafen. The move marks another step in his long career in gastronomy. Jan Appeltrath has worked in the industry since the age of 15. Over the years, he has opened several venues across Mainz. His latest purchase, the 'Zum Schorsch' property, became available after the Biermann brothers retired and closed the business following 41 years of operation. Uncertainty over the lease also contributed to their decision.

The new project at Zollhafen will be his most ambitious yet. Appeltrath plans to invest a seven-figure sum in constructing a building with an event space and a beer garden. Official details will be revealed next week, though a cryptic Instagram post from 'Gasthaus Willems' already hints at the announcement with the words: '...something’s coming soon.'

Appeltrath’s recent track record includes acquiring 'Laurenz' in Neustadt in 2024. He rebranded the establishment as 'Willichs' shortly after. The acquisition and upcoming development signal a new chapter for the Zollhafen area. The project will introduce a large-scale dining and event venue to the district. Local authorities and the community await the official unveiling of the plans next week.
