Kazakhstan cracks down on child safety amid summer accident surge

Kazakhstan has launched a series of measures to protect children and teenagers during the summer months. Authorities have recorded thousands of injuries and deaths among minors in traffic accidents this year. The government is now intensifying efforts to prevent juvenile crime and ensure safety in public spaces. From January 1 to June 7, 2026, official figures show 4,315 children and teenagers were injured in road accidents across Kazakhstan. Tragically, 75 minors lost their lives in these crashes. The data also reveals that 16- and 17-year-olds committed the most juvenile crimes this year, according to the Qamqor legal statistics portal.

In response, police have stepped up patrols and preventive actions. Officers conduct raids and hold talks in areas where children gather, particularly near roads, waterways, and public spaces. The Attention—Children! operation includes transporting minors under police escort during the summer. Additional measures involve monitoring summer camps, deploying patrols by water bodies, and sharing safety advice to prevent accidents like window falls.

Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has ordered government agencies to strengthen crime prevention efforts. Leila Alipbayeva, deputy head of the Juvenile Police Department, highlights the importance of individual work with at-risk adolescents, coordination between agencies, and organising constructive activities. Campaigns such as Children in the Night City, Teenager, and Caution—Children! have proven effective in these efforts.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has declared the protection of young citizens a nationwide priority. The country has also begun implementing the Children of Kazakhstan Concept for 2026–2030, a wide-ranging plan addressing child rights, safety, education, healthcare, and social support. The initiatives aim to reduce juvenile crime and improve child safety across Kazakhstan. Authorities continue to enforce stricter monitoring and preventive actions during the summer period. These steps form part of a broader strategy to safeguard minors and address key risks facing young people today.
