Kolkata schools drop eggs for ISKCON's vegetarian mid-day meals
The BJP-led government in Kolkata has partnered with ISKCON to supply cooked mid-day meals in schools under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The new menu will be entirely vegetarian, replacing the weekly egg serving. The decision has sparked debate among political leaders and nutrition experts. ISKCON will now provide protein-rich vegetarian dishes such as paneer, rajma, soya products, pulses, and milk-based items. The organisation maintains that children can receive all necessary nutrients through these alternatives. Nutrition experts agree that a well-planned vegetarian diet can meet nutritional needs but stress the importance of careful menu preparation.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari defended the move, stating it aims to improve food quality and hygiene for students. The material cost for primary school meals has also risen from Rs 6.78 to Rs 10 per child. However, some teachers worry that students may prefer eggs over the new vegetarian options.
Opposition leaders from TMC have criticised the decision, accusing the government of imposing vegetarianism. They claim the change interferes with long-standing dietary habits in Bengal. The new mid-day meal programme will introduce a vegetarian-only menu in Kolkata’s schools. ISKCON will ensure protein-rich meals are provided, while critics question its impact on student preferences. The cost increase reflects an effort to maintain quality in the revised programme.
