Dietitians Share 3 Easy, Heart-Healthy Recipes Anyone Can Master
Dietitians Megan and Melissa recently hosted a Healthy Heart Demo on It’s All About Kids. The session featured three heart-friendly recipes, each designed to be both nutritious and simple to prepare. Attendees watched as the pair cooked turkey meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, and dark chocolate peanut butter and banana sandwich cookies.
The first dish demonstrated was turkey meatloaf. The recipe included ½ pound of mushrooms, one large onion, and two cloves of garlic for added flavour. Other ingredients were ⅓ cup skim milk, one cup of oatmeal, two large eggs, and 1¼ pounds of ground turkey. Seasonings like Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, canned diced tomatoes, and Italian seasoning completed the mix.
Next came the chicken and dumplings, a comforting classic with a healthy twist. The dish required 2 pounds of cooked chicken, 2 cups each of carrots and celery, and one large onion. For the broth, they used 8 cups of no salt added chicken stock. The dumplings themselves were made from a blend of whole wheat and all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Butter and skim milk bound the dough together. The final recipe was a sweet treat: dark chocolate peanut butter and banana sandwich cookies. Only three ingredients were needed—two medium to large bananas, 1 cup of dark chocolate chips, and ¼ cup of smooth peanut butter. The simple combination offered a healthier dessert option without sacrificing taste.
All three recipes were chosen for their balance of nutrition and ease of preparation. The turkey meatloaf provided lean protein, while the chicken and dumplings kept sodium in check with unsalted broth. Even the dessert used natural sweetness from bananas and dark chocolate. The demo aimed to show how heart-healthy meals can still be flavourful and satisfying.
