UAE Launches Bold Plan to Combat Invasive Bird Threats to Biodiversity

The UAE has launched a national strategy to tackle invasive bird species threatening its biodiversity. Six priority species have been identified under the plan, which aims to coordinate efforts across all seven emirates. The initiative seeks to protect native wildlife and ecosystems from the growing impact of these birds. The UAE National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plan (NISSAP) targets common myna, bank myna, rock pigeon, Indian house crow, Alexandrine parakeet, and rose-ringed parakeet. These birds can damage crops, spread visual pollution, and outcompete local species for food and habitat. They also pose risks by transmitting diseases and disrupting ecological balance.

To address the issue, authorities are improving waste management to cut off food sources for invasive species. Species-specific control plans are being developed alongside ecosystem restoration projects. The strategy also includes regular emergency response simulations to enhance coordination between government bodies, academic institutions, and NGOs.

Public awareness campaigns are part of the effort to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species. The plan strengthens institutional capacity and promotes cooperation at national, regional, and international levels. The strategy focuses on managing priority species and mitigating their environmental impact. Improved coordination and public engagement are expected to reduce threats to native wildlife. Authorities will continue to monitor and adapt measures to protect the UAE’s ecosystems.
