HKUST Unveils Groundbreaking MR × AI Digital Art Exhibition Across Two Cities

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has launched the SURREALITY Mixed Reality (MR) × Artificial Intelligence (AI) Digital Art Cross-City Exhibition. It features nearly 50 works by over 70 digital artists from around the world, showcasing the university’s dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration. Today, 19 of these works premiered at the Clear Water Bay campus. The exhibition transforms the space into an immersive, technology-driven art environment. Among the highlighted pieces is an MR recreation of the classic GFP Bunny by Prof. Eduardo KAC, alongside VR works like Astra by Eliza MCNITT and Mother’s Body Remembers by Benedict YU.

The exhibition will open at HKUST(GZ) on June 17, 2026, and run until July 31, 2026, before returning to Hong Kong for public viewing. It includes contributions from renowned international and Chinese Mainland artists, as well as faculty and students from both HKUST campuses.

Prof. Lionel NI Ming-Shuan, President of HKUST(GZ), described SURREALITY as the world’s first large-scale MR × AI art exhibition. He emphasised its role in demonstrating the university’s strengths in interdisciplinary studies and computational creativity. Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST, called the event a major milestone in integrating technology, humanities, and cross-regional innovation. The exhibition blends creativity with VR, MR, and AI technologies. It turns the HKUST campuses into a global hub for arts innovation and technological excellence. The public will have the chance to experience the works in both Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
