Huế's bold 2030 vision merges heritage with sustainable festival tourism
Huế has revealed an updated development plan for 2021–2030, placing heritage and sustainability at its core. The city, already one of Việt Nam’s 10 priority tourism hubs, aims to transform into a leading festival destination with a strong Vietnamese identity by the end of the decade.
The strategy blends cultural preservation with green growth, targeting both domestic and international visitors through innovative experiences and eco-conscious practices. The adjusted plan reorganises Huế’s tourism into four distinct zones. A heritage core will anchor the city’s historical appeal, while the lagoon and coastal landscapes offer scenic retreats. The mountainous region will cater to adventure tourism, and rural areas will highlight agricultural traditions.
Transport links will be upgraded to improve regional connectivity, making the city more accessible. The push for sustainability includes strict bioclimatic standards and a ban on single-use plastics in night-time tourism areas. Digital transformation will support these efforts, ensuring smoother operations and reduced environmental impact.
By 2030, Huế intends to position itself as a festival city with global recognition. The focus remains on balancing economic growth with heritage protection, aligning with national policies like Resolution 80. New services and extended visitor stays are expected to deepen engagement while preserving the city’s authenticity.
Cultural industries and the night-time economy will play a key role in the city’s competitive edge. Officials believe this mix of tradition and innovation will set Huế apart in Asia’s tourism market. Huế’s updated plan sets clear targets for sustainable tourism and heritage-led development. The city’s focus on green practices, improved infrastructure, and cultural festivals aims to attract longer-term visitors. If successful, the strategy could redefine Huế as a model for responsible tourism in the region.
