Georgia boosts aquaculture safety with EU-backed FAO training initiative

Georgia’s aquaculture sector has launched a new training programme to improve food safety and meet EU standards. The initiative, backed by the FAO, aims to strengthen inspection systems and align practices with international requirements. A four-day training session was held to teach participants how to identify hazards, apply GAqP and HACCP principles, and carry out standardised inspections. The programme also focused on evaluating, monitoring, and enforcing food safety standards in aquaculture production.

A team of trainers was established to share knowledge and ensure consistent food safety practices across the country. The effort is part of FAO’s broader support to enhance Georgia’s national food safety system.

FAO Programme Manager Guido Agostinucci highlighted the training’s role in fostering cooperation and maintaining uniform standards. The EU, FAO, and Sweden are jointly supporting the initiative through the ENPARD IV programme. Denis Reiss from the EU Delegation noted its contribution to safer food production and a more sustainable sector. The training strengthens Georgia’s aquaculture inspection system and brings it closer to EU standards. It also supports the sector’s long-term sustainability and food safety compliance. The programme reflects ongoing collaboration between Georgia, the EU, and FAO.
