St. Albans dairy plant closure leaves 80 jobs and a community legacy at risk

Dairy Farmers of America will close its St. Albans milk processing plant and the adjoining St. Albans Creamery & Supply. The decision affects roughly 80 employees and marks the end of an era for a facility deeply rooted in the local community. Operations will cease on 17 August. The plant and store have served the St. Albans area for decades. They have long been a cornerstone of Franklin County, supplying dairy to major Vermont vendors like Ben & Jerry’s and Cabot Creamery. The closure removes a key processing hub in a region heavily dependent on dairy farming.

Dairy Farmers of America described the move as part of wider operational changes. The company stated the decision does not reflect on the workers’ performance. In October 2025, unionised employees at the plant secured a new contract after raising concerns over harsh working conditions.

The organisation has pledged support for affected staff, including severance pay and transition assistance. Milk currently processed at the St. Albans facility will be redirected to ensure no disruption for regional farmers or customers. The shutdown will take effect in mid-August. It leaves a significant gap in the local dairy economy. However, the company’s plans aim to maintain market access for farmers and continuity for customers.
