India overtakes Germany as China cements its lead in global car production

Global car production is shifting rapidly as new players rise and traditional leaders fall. India’s passenger car output has surged, pushing Germany out of the top three for the first time. China remains the undisputed leader in volume, far ahead of all other nations combined. Between 2019 and 2025, India achieved a 48% increase in passenger car production. This growth is the highest among major automotive nations. As a result, it now outpaces established manufacturers like Germany in total output.

Meanwhile, China produced 30.3 million passenger cars in 2025 alone. This figure exceeds the combined total of the next 13 largest producers. The country also serves as a key export hub for major brands.

Volkswagen Group manufactures its all-electric Cupra Tavascan in Anhui for European markets. Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory exports Model 3 and Model Y worldwide. BMW builds the iX3 exclusively in Shenyang for global distribution. Mercedes-Benz also develops and produces the latest Smart models in Xi’an for international sales.

Other nations have struggled. The U.S. saw a 49% drop in production from 2019 to 2025. France and Mexico each experienced a 36% decline over the same period. India’s rapid expansion has reshaped the global automotive rankings. China’s dominance in both volume and export-focused manufacturing is now unmatched. Traditional leaders like the U.S., Germany, and France face significant declines in output.
