Germany's strict child car seat laws explained for parents

Germany has strict rules for transporting children in vehicles. Any child under 12 or shorter than 1.50 metres must use an approved restraint system. These regulations aim to ensure safety for young passengers on every journey. Children under 12 or below 150 cm must travel in a child seat that meets UNECE Regulation 44. For a five-year-old, a Group 2/3 restraint is typically recommended, suitable for weights between 15 and 36 kg. Booster seats are an option for older children who have outgrown standard child seats but are still too small for a regular seat belt. Once a child reaches the required height, standard seat belts can be used, as long as they comply with UN/ECE safety standards.

Breaking these rules is a regulatory offence in Germany and can lead to fines. For longer trips, parents are advised to plan regular breaks and pack snacks and drinks.
