Austria's 2027–2028 arts budget spares deep cuts but trims key programmes
The Austrian government has finalised its arts and culture budget for 2027 and 2028. Significant cuts were avoided, but several key areas still face reductions. Federal museums and specific programmes will see notable changes in funding. Negotiations prevented a drastic overall cut to the arts and culture sector. However, the budget will still shrink by 3.3 percent in 2027. Federal museums will receive €151.2 million annually for the next two years, down from previous levels.
No funds have been set aside for planned renovations at major federal museums. The Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art alone lost €11.4 million from its renovation budget. Meanwhile, the ÖFI+ programme will see a sharp drop, from €44.3 million in 2025 to just €2.5 million in the new budget period.
Some areas remain stable. Base funding for Federal Theaters stays at €204.2 million for both years. The FISAplus programme will also maintain its current level. The Austrian Film Institute’s budget is set at €37 million annually for 2027 and 2028.
Amid these changes, cultural institutions continue their work. The Burgtheater recently premiered The Skin of Our Teeth, directed by Stefan Bachmann. The budget adjustments will take effect in 2027. Museums and certain programmes will operate with reduced resources. Cultural institutions will adapt to the new financial framework while maintaining their scheduled activities.
