Uttar Pradesh transforms women's safety and economic empowerment in eight years

Uttar Pradesh has seen notable improvements in women’s safety and empowerment over the past eight years. Crime rates against women have declined, while economic and social initiatives have expanded opportunities for millions. Since 2016, reported kidnappings of women in the state have dropped from 13,014 to 7,919 in 2024. The rape rate has also fallen, from 4.6 per lakh women to 2.8 in the same period. Dowry-related harassment and deaths have decreased from 2.4 to 1.8 per lakh women.

The state government has strengthened law enforcement by increasing female police personnel from around 10,000 in 2017 to over 44,000 today. This has contributed to a safer environment for women, supporting their dignity and security.

Economic schemes have played a major role in women’s progress. The Lakhpati Didi campaign has enabled 1.855 million women to earn at least ₹100,000 annually. Nearly 10 million women have joined Self-Help Groups, gaining access to credit and self-employment. The Ujjwala Yojana has provided free LPG connections to 18.6 million families, improving health and living conditions. Additionally, the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana has supported over 2.737 million girls with financial aid for education. These changes have led to better safety, health, and economic independence for women across Uttar Pradesh. The combined efforts of state and central governments have created measurable improvements in both social and economic conditions.
