Cloud seeding is gaining global interest as water shortages and climate pressures grow. The technique involves injecting silver iodide into clouds to encourage rain or snow formation. State-backed programs are now using it to increase precipitation and adjust storm patterns. Frank McDonough runs a cloud-seeding program at the Desert Research Institute in Reno. His team uses custom-built machines to heat and release silver iodide into the atmosphere. This process helps water vapour condense into ice crystals or raindrops, boosting snowfall.

In the past, McDonough’s program has raised snowpack levels by five to ten percent. The Desert Research Institute estimates that seeding around Reno produces enough extra precipitation to supply about 40,000 households. Such efforts are vital in the American West, where winter snowpack provides critical water resources for the summer months.

Since 1955, annual snowpack in the region has dropped by 23 percent. Projections suggest snowmelt runoff could fall by a third by the end of the century. These declines make cloud seeding an increasingly important tool for managing water supplies. Cloud seeding offers a practical way to address water scarcity in drought-prone areas. Programs like those at DRI demonstrate measurable increases in snowpack and precipitation. As climate stress intensifies, these efforts may become more widespread to secure water for communities and agriculture.
