Sweden's first new nuclear plant in 40 years taps Rolls-Royce SMR tech

Videberg Kraft has chosen Rolls-Royce SMR as the supplier for a new nuclear project on the Väro Peninsula near Ringhals. This marks Sweden’s first nuclear power plant in over 40 years. The project aims to add 1.5 GW of capacity to the national grid. In December 2025, the Swedish government received its first application for state aid for a nuclear power project from Videberg Kraft. The company plans to install three small modular reactors, each with a 470 MWe design based on pressurised water technology.

Construction will rely heavily on factory production, with 90% of each unit built off-site. On-site work will focus on assembling pre-fabricated, pre-tested modules. Rolls-Royce SMR also brings a strong network of local subcontractors, mostly near the project site.

The first unit is expected to begin operations in the mid-2030s. Sweden is now the third European country to adopt Rolls-Royce SMR technology. The Videberg Project will introduce Sweden’s first new nuclear plant since the 1980s. It will contribute roughly 1.5 GW to the grid and use advanced modular reactor designs. The mid-2030s target for operation depends on regulatory approvals and construction progress.
