Yakutia's Northern Taste of Olonkho's Land Redefines Heritage Dining with Modern Flair

A gourmet dinner called Northern Taste of Olonkho’s Land took place during the 12th Taste of Yakutia 2025 Festival. The event, hosted by the Makhtal Center for Yakut Cuisine, showcased traditional dishes with a modern twist. Guests enjoyed a unique blend of heritage flavours and contemporary presentation.

The evening’s menu featured a mix of classic and reimagined Yakut dishes. Warm venison salads with wild berries and herbs sat alongside medium-rare horse meat and delicate burbot liver. A standout was D’yogotoy Braised Horse Ribs, slow-cooked with orzo pasta, Yakut cream, and aged Amga cheese.

A striking centrepiece was the *Treasures of the North*—a frozen platter with five varieties of stroganina (thinly sliced raw fish or meat) paired with two signature sauces. Handcrafted drinks, including strawberry-infused pink *byyrpakh* and festive New Year’s lemonade, complemented the meal. Under chef Fyodor Krivoshapkin’s direction, each dish arrived with a story and musical accompaniment, turning the dinner into a gastronomic performance. Natalia Naumova, Marketing Director of the Lukinykh Group, noted that the festival strengthens domestic tourism by introducing visitors to Yakut culture through food. She added that traditional ingredients and techniques help guests connect with the Sakha people’s heritage. Tatyana Alexandrovna later reflected that the event highlighted Yakutia’s growing gastrotourism scene. By blending age-old recipes with modern flair, the dinner demonstrated how local cuisine continues to evolve.

The Northern Taste of Olonkho’s Land dinner wrapped up as part of the wider Taste of Yakutia 2025 Festival. The evening’s fusion of tradition and innovation offered a fresh take on Yakut gastronomy. Organisers hope such events will keep drawing attention to the region’s rich culinary identity.
