Yakut Blacksmiths Shine at Sheffield's Global Blade Exhibition

Yakut blacksmiths have dominated the 'Blade: Tradition and Modernity' International Exhibition, securing top honours in multiple categories. The event, held this year in Sheffield, UK, showcased their craftsmanship and dedication to reviving traditional techniques.

The craftsmen returned with first-place wins in several competitions, alongside personal recognition from Russian cultural authorities.

Alexander Danilov and Arzhan Kukhaev claimed first place in the 'Historical Reconstruction' category with their meticulously crafted akinakes. Danilov also earned second place in the 'Long Blade' division for his batyu titled Khotokon.

In the 'National Knife' competition, Yakov Danilov took the top prize, while Alexander Terentyev from Amginsky District secured second place. Terentyev additionally won third in the blade trials for his piece *Hunter. Sakha*. Meanwhile, Mikhail Baishev's traditional hunting knife earned third place in the same category. The 'Long Blade' category saw Leonid Fyodorov and Alexander Protopopov win first place with their work *Batyu 'The Bears'*. Stepan Pakhomov from Tattinsky District also triumphed, taking first in the 'Field Kitchen Knife' division. All participating Yakut craftsmen received certificates from the Museums Department of the Russian Ministry of Culture. These awards recognised their efforts to preserve national traditions and maintain high standards of quality. The Sheffield exhibition marked the third instalment of the event, following previous editions in Solingen, Germany (2019), and Seki, Japan (2022).

Yakutia's success at the exhibition highlights the region's mastery of blade-making traditions. The craftsmen's achievements span historical reconstructions, national knives, and artistic long blades. Their recognition by international judges and Russian cultural officials underscores the skill and cultural significance of their work.
