Walmart's Potato Salad Wins Blind Taste Test Against Publix and Rivals
Southern Living editors recently put six store-bought potato salads to the speed test. The blind taste trial compared offerings from Publix, Walmart, The Fresh Market and SE Grocers (Winn Dixie). Each salad was scored on flavour, texture and overall appeal before a clear winner emerged.
The panel ranked every option on a scale of one to five, with five being the best. While some salads divided opinion, one stood out as the favourite among most tasters.
Walmart's Freshness Guaranteed Original Potato Salad took the top spot. Editors praised its classic taste, balanced tang and sweetness, and satisfying texture. The crunchy celery and strong pickle flavour won over many, though a few found the dressing slightly heavy.
Publix's two entries received mixed reviews. Their Deli Baked Potato Salad was criticised for being bland, despite its creamy texture. The Southern-Style version split opinions—some enjoyed its traditional flavour, while others disliked its artificial aftertaste and large chunks of egg.
SE Grocers (Winn Dixie) also had two salads in the running. Their Mustard Potato Salad was polarising: some loved its tangy kick and potato texture, but others found it too sharp. The Southern-Style version, however, disappointed with a watery, mushy consistency and grainy potatoes.
The Fresh Market's Baked Potato Salad stood out for its tangy sour cream and red potatoes. Yet, the addition of shredded cheese and lack of classic mustard flavour left some editors unimpressed.
No other supermarket chains were highlighted for consistently high-quality potato salads in the blind test. The results focused solely on the six sampled options from the four named stores.
Walmart's Freshness Guaranteed Original Potato Salad came out on top after careful consideration. Its mix of crunch, balanced flavours and familiar taste secured the highest scores. The test showed that even simple store-bought sides can vary widely in speed and appeal.
