Virginia’s Matt and Tony’s Kitchen Earns a Spot on Yelp’s Top 100 Restaurants

A Virginia restaurant named after an Austrian baker who once supplied bread to President John F. Kennedy has earned a spot on Yelp’s prestigious Top 100 list. Matt and Tony’s All Day Kitchen + Bar, which opened in 2022, now ranks among the best dining destinations in the U.S.

The restaurant takes its name from Anton 'Tony' Schabas, a celebrated Austrian baker known as the Päbstrymeister. Schabas worked at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., where his rye bread became a favourite of President Kennedy. His great-grandson, Matt Sloan, co-founded the eatery to honour this family legacy.

Located at 1501 Mount Vernon Avenue, the spot replaced Charlie’s on the Avenue. It serves all-day breakfast alongside hearty, scratch-made American dishes. Beyond its regular menu, Matt and Tony’s hosts an exclusive Supper Club—a five-course seasonal tasting experience with a waitlist. Yelp’s Top 100 list, curated by staff, ranks establishments based on review volume and ratings. Matt and Tony’s secured the 100th position, joining two other Virginia venues: Chay Restaurant in Fairfax County and Fountain Grill in Ashburn.

The recognition places Matt and Tony’s among the country’s most celebrated dining spots. Its mix of family history, bold flavours, and exclusive events has drawn attention since its 2022 debut. The restaurant now stands as one of Virginia’s top culinary destinations.
