Thuringians spend a three-digit million amount for bio - Thuringia's organic boom takes center stage at Germany's top trade fair

Organic food continues to gain traction across Germany, with more consumers opting for it over conventional options. In Thuringia, this trend is particularly pronounced, as the region gears up to showcase its organic sector at a major trade fair next month.

Thuringia now hosts over 500 organic farms, comprising 15% of all agricultural businesses in the state. Since 2020, their numbers have climbed from 1,122 to 1,456—a rise of nearly 30%, according to the Thuringia Ministry of Agriculture.

Residents in the region spent around €188 million on organic products in 2024 alone. Nationally, Germans spent nearly €17 billion on organic food last year, with projections for 2025 exceeding €18 billion.

To highlight this growth, Thuringia's organic producers will display their goods at Biofach in Nuremberg from February 10 to 13. The event will feature a wide range of locally produced organic items.

The steady increase in organic farming and consumer spending indicates a clear shift in shopping habits. With Thuringia's sector expanding and national sales rising, organic food is becoming a significant part of Germany's agricultural economy. The upcoming trade fair will further emphasize the region's role in this growing market.
