Texas Roadhouse thrives as diners ditch fast food for better value
The restaurant industry is shifting as consumers adjust their spending habits. Casual dining chains like Texas Roadhouse and Chili's are gaining ground, while fast-food competitors struggle with rising prices.
Texas Roadhouse has stood out with strong growth, outperforming rivals in both sales and stock performance since 2022.
Texas Roadhouse reported a 6.1% increase in same-store sales for its latest quarter, with guest visits up 4.3%. The chain has maintained steady growth by avoiding deep discounts and keeping price hikes modest—typically between 3% and 4%.
Since inflation began in 2022, Texas Roadhouse has widened its lead over competitors. Its same-store sales rose 8.5% in 2023, compared to Darden's 6.2% and Brinker's 4.1%. By early 2026, its stock had surged roughly 120%, far ahead of Darden's 45% and Brinker's 20%. The company's success stems from tight cost controls, efficient labour use, and expansion—adding 18 new locations in 2024 alone.
Meanwhile, Brinker International, owner of Chili's, has pushed advertising to emphasise its value over fast-food options. Chili's Grill & Bar has now achieved 19 straight quarters of growth, driven by promotions like the 3 for Me platform and Triple Dipper menu. Darden Restaurants, which operates Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, has also held steady by leveraging its scale to keep prices competitive.
The broader casual dining sector is gaining market share as fast-food and fast-casual chains raise prices. However, steakhouses still face challenges from high beef costs, putting pressure on profit margins.
Texas Roadhouse's disciplined pricing and expansion strategy have set it apart in a changing market. With casual dining chains attracting more customers, the shift in consumer spending continues to reshape the industry.
Fast-food's price increases have made sit-down meals a more appealing option for many diners.
