Sverdlovsk Region releases 24,000 young carp to boost ecological balance and tourism
Authorities in the Sverdlovsk Region have released thousands of young carp into three protected water bodies. The move is part of a wider state-backed programme to boost ecological health and support local tourism. Over 20 fish species have already been introduced under the same scheme.
Specialists from the region's Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology carried out the latest stocking. They released around 8,000 carp fry into each of the Volchikhinsky Reservoir, Novo-Mariinsky Reservoir and Upper-Sysertsky Pond. All three sites hold regional protected status.
Carp were chosen for their role in maintaining clean water. The fish feed on bottom algae, helping to purify the reservoirs naturally. Officials described the release as a routine step in long-term ecological management.
The initiative also aims to benefit tourism, which saw 1.2 million visits during the summer of 2025. The carp population is expected to support recreational fishing and attract more visitors to the area.
The stocking forms part of the state programme Ensuring Rational and Safe Nature Management in the Sverdlovsk Region. Further releases are planned as officials continue efforts to balance ecological health with tourism growth. The region has now introduced over 20 fish species through the scheme.
