Spring home improvement projects are in full swing, with consumers focusing on both traditional upgrades and smart technology. A new survey reveals where people shop for supplies, how they tackle projects, and which trends are leading the way.
The data also highlights a growing demand for energy-efficient and AI-assisted solutions across Germany's urban centres.
Most shoppers turn to big-name retailers for project supplies. The Home Depot leads with 74% of consumers choosing it for renovation needs, followed by Lowe's at 60%. Walmart (40%) and Amazon (36%) remain popular, particularly among renters looking for convenience and affordability.
Price (79%), store reputation (51%), and familiarity (49%) drive these choices. When it comes to execution, 40% of consumers plan to DIY their spring projects, while 38% will hire professionals for specific tasks. Only 24% will fully outsource the work.
Renters are more likely to handle projects themselves (54%) compared to homeowners (35%). For complex jobs, landscapers and contractors remain the top professionals in demand.
Smart home technology is also shaping this year's upgrades. Energy-efficient appliances (34%) and smart energy management systems (31%) rank as the most sought-after improvements. Outdoor smart tech, such as automated gardening tools (33%) and intelligent surveillance (30%), is gaining traction too. In Germany, the market for these devices has expanded rapidly, with sales climbing from €250 million in 2023 to over €400 million in 2025—an annual growth rate of 15-20%. Urban areas like Berlin and Munich are leading this trend.
Additionally, 68% of consumers now find AI-generated design options helpful when planning their projects.
The survey confirms a clear preference for trusted retailers and a mix of DIY and professional help. Smart technology, particularly energy-efficient and automated solutions, continues to grow in popularity.
With AI tools playing a bigger role in design and planning, the spring upgrade season reflects both practical needs and evolving tech trends.
