Shropshire schools receive £30k to boost walking, cycling and scooting

Twenty-four schools in Shropshire will soon benefit from new funding to boost walking, cycling, and scooting. The initiative aims to get more children travelling actively while improving safety and fitness. Shropshire Council secured £30,000 from Active Travel England to support the scheme. Each of the 24 selected schools can claim up to £1,000 for projects that encourage active travel. The money will cover scooter and bike racks, new scooters and bikes, helmets, and safety gear. Schools will also receive hi-vis jackets, maintenance kits, and extra signage to promote safer journeys.

The funding follows a successful bid by Shropshire Council, which highlighted the need for better walking and cycling options. Kirstie Hurst-Knight, the council’s cabinet member for children and education, welcomed the investment. She noted that it would help children stay active while making school trips greener and safer. Meanwhile, nominations for the third annual CiTTi Awards are now open. The awards recognise achievements in active travel and will take place on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

The £30,000 grant will fund equipment, training, and infrastructure across Shropshire’s schools. The goal is to reduce car use and encourage healthier travel habits among pupils. Schools can now apply for their share of the funding to kickstart their projects.
