Samyang Foods Launches European Plant-Based Research Hub in Wageningen
South Korean food giant Samyang Foods is expanding into Europe with a new research hub in Wageningen, Netherlands. The centre will focus on developing plant-based and functional foods. The company selected the Dutch city for its strong food technology networks and supportive policies on alternative proteins.
The facility will operate as an independent overseas research base, separate from Samyang Foods Europe, the firm's existing sales subsidiary in Amsterdam. Its main tasks will include tech scouting, joint research projects, material testing, and tracking global food trends.
Wageningen's reputation in food innovation played a key role in the decision. The region hosts a mix of academic institutions and food industry partners, offering access to specialised talent and research. The hub will prioritise plant protein research, aiming to create healthier and more functional plant-based products. The move aligns with the Dutch government's target of a 50-50 split between plant-based and animal-derived protein consumption by 2030. Meanwhile, South Korea is also advancing its own future food sector, with a national action plan for plant-based foods.
The new hub will strengthen Samyang Foods' position in the growing alternative protein market. By tapping into Wageningen's expertise, the company plans to accelerate innovation in plant-based foods. Operations will focus on research rather than commercial production or local startup development.
