Russia cracks down on burger chains after hygiene scandals in Omsk

Russia's consumer watchdog, Roskachestvo, has begun inspecting burger restaurants across the country. The move follows reports of hygiene issues and concerns over whether rising prices reflect food quality. In Omsk, the announcement has already triggered changes in local eateries, with some forced to close temporarily for upgrades. The inspection, announced in early 2026, revealed serious problems in Omsk's burger scene. At Burger King Omsk-Center, expired meat was found in February, while other outlets faced criticism over E. coli contamination. By March, authorities ordered improvements, including new refrigeration units and mandatory staff retraining. Chains like Tasty Burg shut down briefly to meet the new standards.

The crackdown comes as Omsk's burger market remains competitive, with a wide price range and steady customer demand. At *Sauce*, a small eatery, burgers cost between 190 and 530 rubles, but a recent visit showed poor hygiene—the cook did not change gloves between handling ingredients. The food itself was underwhelming, lacking strong flavours and leaving customers unsatisfied. In contrast, *Krasnodarsky Paren*, a premium chain, offers 15 burger options priced from 295 to 810 rubles. Their burgers are known for being hearty, fresh, and well-seasoned, with bold sauces. Hygiene standards here appear strict: staff regularly change gloves, and the kitchen stays clean. The inspection could soon confirm whether higher prices in Omsk's burger scene truly match the quality on offer.

The Roskachestvo inspection has already pushed Omsk's burger restaurants to raise their standards. Some have closed for upgrades, while others now face closer scrutiny over food safety and value. With the results pending, customers will soon see whether the city's pricier burgers justify their cost.
