REWE's eco-friendly supermarket to transform Koblenz's Rauental by 2027

New REWE Supermarket Breaks Ground in Koblenz's Rauental District

After the old REWE store on Koblenz's Moselweißer Straße closed in June 2025 and was demolished by February of this year, the site in the Rauental neighborhood now has a fresh update. On Thursday, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony marked the official start of construction for a new, modern branch, with opening planned for the first quarter of 2027.

The new building is set to play a central role in local supply chains, forming a neighborhood retail hub alongside nearby businesses. Spanning roughly 2,050 square meters of retail space, the supermarket will include a 75-square-meter bakery shop by Die Lohners, complete with an in-store café. Customers will also benefit from 100 wider parking spaces and 25 bicycle racks.

Sustainability and Service at the Forefront

A key priority for the project is sustainability. The new store is being built under REWE's Green Building concept and aims to achieve Gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Features will include a green roof to improve the microclimate and a photovoltaic system for on-site power generation. Energy-efficient building technology, LED lighting, and heat recovery systems are expected to cut energy consumption by 30 to 50 percent.

Service offerings are also getting an upgrade: Four of the new parking spaces will include electric vehicle charging stations, with plans already in place to expand to eight. Additionally, a 24/7-accessible DHL parcel station will be integrated into the site.

Fresh Counters and Local Products

Inside, shoppers can look forward to a revamped layout, as future store manager Pascal Hartmann explains. "Right at the entrance, there will be a large produce section where fresh salads and wraps will be prepared on-site," says Hartmann. The store will also feature an Eat Happy sushi shop, a bakery station, and hot and cold deli counters with daily rotating, freshly cooked menus.

Under the motto "From the Region, for the Region," the supermarket aims to bolster the local economy by partnering with nearby farmers, beekeepers, and producers to minimize transport distances. The company has confirmed that all employees from the old location will be retained. REWE is also placing a strong emphasis on training and professional development to help address the retail sector's skilled labor shortage.

While the Rauental branch is secured for the future, another REWE location in Koblenz remains in limbo: The lease for the store in the Lühr-Center expires in September 2026. In response to a query from Merkurist, the company stated that it is working on extending the lease.
