Plumstead Centre reopens as a vibrant cultural and leisure hub after bold redesign

The Plumstead Centre has reopened after a major redevelopment that blends old and new. The project, led by Hawkins\Brown, transforms a historic library into a modern hub for culture, leisure, and sport. Local leaders have praised its impact on the community and its role in the area's wider regeneration plans.

The centre first opened in 2005 but has now been expanded with a two-storey extension. A striking full-height glazed entrance improves accessibility, while the design keeps the building's connection to the Grade II listed Plumstead Library. Original features like barrel-vaulted skylights and parquet flooring were carefully restored, ensuring the building's heritage remains visible.

Inside, the redeveloped space includes separate children's and adults' libraries, a café, and flexible areas for collaboration. A gym, badminton court, and two large studios cater to performing arts, yoga, and exhibitions. The layout emphasises openness, allowing visitors to see across the entire building. The project marks the first phase of the Royal Borough of Greenwich's Urban Framework for Plumstead. Hawkins\Brown's work earned two 2022 RIBA London Awards—one for architecture and another for conservation. Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough, highlighted the centre's new opportunities for residents, calling it a source of local pride.

The Plumstead Centre now offers improved facilities for leisure, culture, and community events. Its blend of historic restoration and modern design has already won recognition. The redevelopment aims to boost engagement and activity in the area for years to come.
