Pizza Hut shuts 250 US locations as fast-food giants pivot to delivery and digital
Yum! Brands has announced plans to close around 250 Pizza Hut outlets across the United States by the first half of 2026. The move comes as the company shifts focus toward more profitable formats and high-growth markets. Meanwhile, Sapphire Foods India, a major KFC franchisee, reported a net loss in its latest quarter, highlighting broader challenges in the fast-food industry.
The closures at Pizza Hut are part of a long-term strategy to improve efficiency and profitability. Yum! Brands aims to reallocate resources toward drive-thru, delivery-focused, and leaner store models, particularly where traditional sit-down restaurants struggle. No Pizza Hut locations in Germany will be affected, with all shutdowns confined to the US.
Higher labour and rental costs have pressured margins across the sector, while digital ordering and delivery apps continue to reshape customer behaviour. Younger consumers now prioritise speed and convenience over traditional dining experiences, pushing brands to adapt.
Sapphire Foods India, which operates KFC in India and other markets, faced its own setbacks in the third quarter. Although KFC's performance remained strong in international markets like Sri Lanka, Pizza Hut outlets under the same franchise saw softer foot traffic and increased competition. A one-time labour cost charge further weighed on Sapphire's profitability, despite underlying revenue growth.
Yum! Brands' decision reflects a broader industry shift toward digital and delivery-driven models. The 250 US closures will allow the company to concentrate on markets with stronger unit economics. For Sapphire Foods, the challenge remains balancing operational costs with evolving consumer demands in a competitive fast-food landscape.
