Oahu's hidden food gems redefine island dining with bold flavours

These spots are somewhat hidden - you'll be pleasantly surprised when you stumble upon them. If you hadn't heard about them before, now you know!

IZAKAYA TENKICHI

You'll see the staircase leading up to this izakaya if you drive slowly on King Street. Some may recognize Izakaya Tenkichi from social media videos showing their lively staff scooping ikura into bowls tableside. The restaurant offers a range of Japanese cuisine from tempura, sushi, handrolls and, of course, ikura. The Wasshoi Show Time is the most popular menu section. Order a large bowl of ikura - perfect for sharing - and the staff will pour it table side for you.

WAIKIKI SNACK STORE

If you rush through Discovery Bay in Waikiki, you may miss Waikiki Snack Store. Specializing in dumplings and shared plates, it's the perfect place to grab a quick lunch. Some dumplings are filled with pork and cabbage, chives, corn or green onions. Order a few other dishes, like the smoked chicken, tofu skin salad, crystal pork or wonton noodle soup. The restaurant offers a lunch combo from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that includes 10 dumplings, wonton soup and a boba milk tea.

WAIKELE COUNTRY CLUB

For most folks, a golf is the highlight at most country clubs, but you won't want to miss the restaurant at Waikele Country Club. It serves some of the best locally inspired, nostalgia-inducing dishes. These include a number of sushi and sashimi dishes - a nigiri set, a Rainbow Roll and even a chirashi set that comes with miso soup, tossed salad and tsukemono. Other island favorites include a sizzling kalbi plate, garlic miso chicken, bibimbap and steamed opakapaka. Or, warm up with oxtail or pig feet soup.
