NYC hospitals launch Meatless Mondays to promote healthier patient diets
NYC Health + Hospitals has rolled out a Meatless Mondays programme across all 11 of its acute care hospitals. Patients can now choose meat-free meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner every Monday. The move aims to encourage healthier eating habits among those in care. The initiative builds on a 2018 pilot at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where a plant-based programme helped patients shift their diets. Dr. Michelle McMacken, who leads the Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program at Bellevue, supported the expansion. The health system plans to add more vegan and vegetarian options throughout the week as well.
Dr. Mitchell Katz, the organisation's president and CEO, stated that the programme empowers patients to make better food choices. Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, a long-time advocate for plant-based diets, has called for all city hospitals to adopt the Meatless Monday pledge. Other institutions, like New York Presbyterian and Lenox Hill Hospital, already offer meatless meals on Mondays. The Department of Education also tested a similar scheme in 2018, running a pilot in 15 Brooklyn public schools. Since then, no other major public or private institutions in New York City have launched a comparable programme.
The Meatless Mondays initiative will now be a permanent feature in NYC Health + Hospitals' meal services. Patients will have access to plant-based options every Monday, with expanded choices expected in the future. The programme aligns with broader efforts to improve public health through diet.
