Northern Greece's cultural tour blends ancient history with fine wine traditions
A cultural tour through northern Greece will explore the region's rich history and renowned wine traditions. The journey begins at Thessaloniki's Makedonia Palace Hotel and includes visits to ancient sites once ruled by Kings Philip and Alexander. Alongside historical stops, the trip will also showcase local winemaking, particularly in Naoussa, where some of Greece's finest wines are produced.
The itinerary focuses on two key locations: Vergina and Pella. These cities were once the heart of Macedonian power, where palaces, theatres, and royal tombs still stand as archaeological treasures. From here, military campaigns were launched, extending influence as far as India. The leaders who ruled this land played a pivotal role in shaping global politics of their time.
The tour also highlights the region's modern wine culture. In Naoussa, at the foot of the Vermio Mountains, wineries craft full-bodied reds from the Xinomavro grape. The area is also known for its sparkling wines, adding a contemporary twist to ancient traditions. While the trip does not cover Thessaloniki's wine history in depth, it offers a taste of nearby Naoussa's acclaimed production. The experience has been organised by Sibylle Benz for the SRF Kulturclub. Brigitte Häring, a cultural editor at Radio SRF 2 Kultur, will co-host the trip, guiding participants through both historical and viticultural discoveries.
The tour blends ancient history with modern winemaking, starting from Thessaloniki and moving through key Macedonian sites. Participants will visit royal ruins, learn about military conquests, and sample wines from one of Greece's most celebrated regions. The trip promises a mix of cultural insight and sensory experience.
