New clothes may carry hidden bacteria, mould and chemicals, experts warn

Newly purchased clothing can carry more than just a fresh look. Experts warn that garments may harbour bacteria, fungi, or even chemicals from production. While the health risks remain low, shoppers should be aware of potential concerns before wearing them straight from the store. Dr. Jami L. Miller, a dermatologist at Vanderbilt Health, highlights that human bacteria—including fecal and nasal viruses—can linger on clothes after trial fittings. She also notes that mould may develop during shipping, particularly in hot, humid conditions. Despite these findings, she stresses that falling ill from new clothing is extremely rare.

Dr. Karen K. Leonas, a textile sciences professor at NC State University, explains that garments can pick up dirt, fungi, and insects during manufacturing and transport. She adds that loose dyes on new items might bleed onto other fabrics, causing permanent stains.

Chemicals used in production pose another risk, according to Dr. Miller. These residues can trigger allergic reactions, especially in those with sensitive skin. However, Dr. David C. Gaston, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt, reassures that catching a disease from new clothing is highly unlikely.

No specific studies have yet measured the exact types or amounts of bacteria and viruses on tried-on clothes. But experts agree that basic precautions, like washing new items, can reduce any minor risks. The chances of getting sick from new clothing are very small, but contaminants like bacteria, mould, and chemicals can still be present. Washing garments before wearing them helps remove potential irritants or residues. This simple step ensures both cleanliness and peace of mind.
