Modi Gifts Putin Rare Kashmiri Saffron in Cultural Diplomacy Move
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a collection of Indian cultural gifts during a recent meeting. Among the items was Kashmiri saffron, a prized spice known for its rich colour, aroma, and health benefits. The gesture has drawn praise from local producers and activists in Kashmir.
The gifts included Kashmiri saffron, a handcrafted marble chess set, Assam tea, and traditional handicrafts from Maharashtra. The saffron, in particular, stands out for its high quality and unique properties, making it a symbol of Kashmir's agricultural culture.
Burhan Din, a resident of Kashmir, expressed pride that the prime minister chose to showcase their locally grown spice on an international stage. Social activist Syed Akhtar Hussain also commended Modi for promoting Kashmiri saffron globally. Alongside the saffron, a Russian edition of the Bhagavad Gita was presented to Putin, further highlighting India's cultural and spiritual traditions.
Global demand for Kashmiri saffron has remained steady, with modest growth expected between 2021 and 2026. Iran remains the largest producer and consumer, while key markets like the European Union, India, and the Middle East continue to import the spice for culinary and medicinal uses. Despite economic shifts, its reputation for quality keeps demand stable.
The selection of Kashmiri saffron as a diplomatic gift has brought attention to the region's prized produce. Local growers and activists have welcomed the recognition, seeing it as a boost for their culture. The exchange also reinforces cultural ties between India and Russia through shared traditions.
