McCormick in talks to acquire Knorr in billion-dollar food industry shake-up

American spice giant McCormick & Company is in talks to buy Knorr, one of Germany's most recognisable food brands. The deal, if finalised, could be worth billions and marks a major shift for the iconic seasoning and soup maker. Currently owned by Unilever, Knorr has been part of its portfolio for nearly 25 years.

Unilever acquired Knorr in 2000, placing it alongside other German brands like Hellmann's, Pfanni, and Mondamin. Since then, the company has maintained four production sites across Germany dedicated to Knorr products. Now, under CEO Fernando Fernandez, Unilever is restructuring its business, leading to the potential sale.

McCormick & Company, a global leader in spices and condiments, stands to gain significantly from the acquisition. With annual revenues approaching $7 billion and a workforce of about 14,000, the US firm already dominates the seasoning market. Adding Knorr would expand its reach further into Europe, particularly in the instant food and spice sectors.

The deal remains under negotiation, but its completion would reshape the ownership of a brand deeply rooted in German kitchens. For McCormick, securing Knorr would strengthen its position in the European market. Meanwhile, Unilever's restructuring continues, with Knorr becoming one of its highest-profile divestments.
