Latvia's food innovators redefine healthy eating with bold new products

This year's Riga Food Innovation Stand showcased 20 companies and organisations pushing boundaries in Latvia's food sector. From protein-packed treats to mushroom-based supplements, the event highlighted creative solutions for health-conscious consumers. Many of these innovations cater to growing trends like fitness, plant-based diets, and cognitive wellness.

One standout at the event was Protein Intake, Riga's first protein-focused café. Aimed at athletes and active individuals, it serves high-protein dishes such as banana bread, peanut protein balls, and berry yoghurt bowls. The demand for such products has surged in Latvia over the past five years, rising by 15–20%. This growth is driven by fitness trends, veganism, and a broader interest in healthy eating. Plant-based proteins like lentils, chickpeas, and meat substitutes from brands such as Beyond Meat have become especially popular.

Another innovator, Spora Lab in Cesis, has spent two years developing supplements from lion's mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus). Known for boosting cognitive function and brain health, these supplements are also used in their mushroom kombucha. The lab's work reflects a wider interest in functional foods that support mental and physical performance.

Elsewhere, Marta Ozola from Valmiera presented her freeze-dried honey cake, made using honey from her husband's apiary. The product combines traditional flavours with modern preservation techniques. Behind many of these ventures is the Latvian Technological Centre, which has supported nearly 10,000 local businesses over 30 years. Meanwhile, the Business Acceleration Centre helps new small and medium-sized enterprises break into the European market through the European Business Network.

The Riga Food Innovation Stand demonstrated how Latvia's food industry is evolving to meet modern demands. With rising interest in protein-rich diets, brain-boosting supplements, and sustainable production, these businesses are positioning themselves for growth. Support from organisations like the Latvian Technological Centre and the Business Acceleration Centre continues to play a key role in their success.
