Larimer County funds rental aid and childcare to ease family struggles in Black History Month

Larimer County has taken new steps to support struggling families while honouring Black History Month. Commissioners approved funding for rental aid and early childhood services, aiming to reduce evictions and childcare costs. The moves come as rising housing pressures leave many households at risk.

February was also proclaimed Black History Month, with this year's theme focusing on the contributions of African Americans in shaping the nation's workforce.

The Board of Larimer County Commissioners allocated $296,255 to Neighbor to Neighbor for emergency rental assistance. The programme has already helped 1,247 households since its 2025 launch—a 23% increase from the previous year. In 2025 alone, 189 families received support, with 88% still housed six months later and eviction filings dropping.

Separately, a $3 million agreement with NoCo Kids Thrive was approved to expand early childhood services by 2026. Funded by a voter-approved sales tax, the initiative will assist families, educators, and childcare providers. The goal is to lower costs and improve access for the nearly 40% of children in the county living in cost-burdened renting households.

The decisions follow a proclamation recognising February as Black History Month. This year's national theme, African Americans and Labor, highlights the long-standing role of Black workers in building the U.S. economy and infrastructure. Commissioners emphasised the importance of acknowledging these contributions while addressing current challenges in housing and childcare.

The new funding will provide direct relief to renters facing eviction and reduce childcare expenses for low-income families. With 60% of Larimer County renters cost-burdened, the measures aim to stabilise housing and support early childhood development. The county's actions align with broader efforts to address economic disparities during Black History Month.
