These are the best pizza chains in the world - L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele crowned world's best pizza chain in 2025 ranking
A panel of Italian experts has crowned the world's 50 best pizza chains—and the winner already has locations in Germany. Here's where to find the best pizza on the planet.
Whether you're too tired to cook or simply craving a great slice, nearly every German city offers a dizzying array of pizzerias, takeout spots, and pizza chains. But which ones truly stand out? For the answer, there's no better authority than the Italians themselves.
The experts at 50 Top Pizza, an Italian culinary platform, have ranked the finest pizza chains worldwide, highlighting where to find the most authentic and delicious pies.
The World's Best Pizza Hails from Italy
Topping the list is a legendary chain that has already opened three locations in Germany: L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele. If you want to taste what's been called the best pizza on Earth, you can do so in Berlin-Schöneberg (Fritz-Reuter-Straße 7), Hamburg (Bahrenfelder Str. 177), or Cologne (Venloer Str. 658).
Founded in Naples in 1870, this historic pizzeria began baking its now-iconic pies on Via Cesare Sersale—a street many consider the "temple of pizza." While the Naples location sticks to classic recipes, its outposts in Berlin, New York, Paris, and Dubai offer a slightly broader menu. Yet no matter where you go, you'll find the signature thin, wagon-wheel-sized pizza with its famously generous overhang.
France Claims Second Place
The runner-up isn't Italian at all—it's French. Over the past decade, the Big Mamma Group has expanded across Europe, bringing its bold take on Italian cuisine with it. Germany is home to three of its restaurants: Giorgia Trattoria in Munich, Cocodrillo in Berlin, and Edmondo in Hamburg.
According to the experts, Big Mamma stays true to tradition while adding creative flair. Diners can enjoy classic Neapolitan pizza—thin-crust, tangy tomato sauce, and fragrant basil—alongside more adventurous options like truffle pizza or the anniversary special, the "Hotline" (spicy sausage, 'nduja, and caramelized red onions).
Spain's Pizza Chain Takes Third
Rounding out the top three is a Spanish contender: Grosso Napoletano, which launched in 2017 and currently operates only on the Iberian Peninsula. Its reputation as one of the world's best is further cemented by an award for its head pizzaiolo, Fabrizio Polacco, named Pizza Chef of the Year 2025.
A standout feature of Grosso Napoletano is its extensive gluten-free menu. The dough—made from rice, corn, and buckwheat flour—is double-fermented for 48 hours. Highlights include the smoky Margherita and, for non-pizza lovers, "Grandma's meatballs."
