Kazakhstan's Honey Boom: Exports Double as Global Demand Rises

Kazakhstan’s honey industry is expanding, with exports more than doubling in 2025. The country shipped 1,477 tons of honey last year, up from just 603.7 tons in 2024. Despite a drop in average prices, demand for Kazakh honey—especially in neighbouring Uzbekistan—has surged. Beekeeping in Kazakhstan has deep roots, stretching back nearly 200 years. The first bee colonies arrived from Bashkortostan in 1786, laying the foundation for today’s thriving industry. Now, the country produces around 5,000 tons of honey annually, benefiting from natural farming methods and minimal use of chemicals or genetically modified crops.

The nation’s diverse geography allows for unique honey varieties. Altai honey, including angelica and sweet clover types, is particularly well-known. Zhantak honey is another prized product, valued for its distinct flavour and natural quality. Genuine Kazakh honey is recognised by its rich fragrance and tendency to crystallise over time. Export figures for 2025 show strong growth, with shipments worth $1.57 million—almost double the previous year’s $824,100. Uzbekistan became the top buyer, importing 1,264 tons. However, the average export price fell from $1.36 per kilogram in 2024 to $1.06 in 2025. Looking ahead, Kazakhstan sees potential in larger markets like China, India, Türkiye, and Arab countries. These densely populated regions could drive further demand for its high-quality honey.

Kazakhstan’s honey exports have grown rapidly, with 2025 volumes more than doubling. While prices have declined, the industry remains optimistic about future expansion. Markets in Asia and the Middle East could offer new opportunities for its diverse and naturally produced honey.
